When I think of vegan comfort food, I immediately think of mac n cheese. I used to love Kraft Dinner growing up. Oh, how times have changed. What hasn’t changed, is my love for a good mac n cheese. These days, though, I prefer it cruelty free and gluten free. Lucky for me, Grasshopper makes a delicious version!
I visited Grasshopper tonight for the first time and I was extremely satisfied with my experience there. It is exactly what I pictured. The restaurant has a cool vibe to it, seating about 20 people at capacity. The service was good and the waitress took our orders on an iPad, which I thought was neat. The entire menu is vegan, with gluten free options clearly marked. There is also a full alcoholic beverage menu that is vegan, which I made a mental note of for when I will definitely be returning to try out a drink!
I ordered the Quinoa Mac ‘N Cheese and my friend ordered the Mushroom ‘N Rice Bowl, fully knowing that we would end up picking off eachother’s plates. I’m sorry, but I had to try her meal too! I’m glad I did because it was delicious! The mushrooms were in huge chunks, which I loved. It was perfectly saucy, perfectly spiced. I would definitely order that next time! My Mac ‘N Cheese was also delicious. The ‘cheese’ tasted cheesy, which can sometimes be hard to perfect and I loved that it was not soy based. In fact, my whole dish was soy free! What stole the show for me, was the side of kale chips that came with my mac n cheese. I have never tasted kale chips so good! I have to figure out how to replicate them… hmm… maybe stay tuned for something similar to be posted in recipes soon…

Portion sizes were ok. I would say that my mac n cheese was on the smaller side, similar to an appetizer size, while my friends dish was an average dinner portion. Prices are extremely reasonable – my meal was only $9 CAD.
