I decided to try Khao San Road for my 4 year anniversary. I had heard it was really good and I love Thai food. What gravitated me towards this restaurant is that they have completely separate vegan and gluten free menus. Thai food as it is, generally has vegan food – authentic Thai coconut curry always being a safe bet to eat. I spent a week in Thailand last year and since then have grown a deep appreciation for good Thai food. It is incomparable, in my opinion. When we arrived to Khao San Road, it was packed. The wait to get in was about 30 minutes, but it was worth it. The front of the restaurant is set up with communal tables – about 10 people per table. That’s where we were seated and it was ok. It is not the most intimate of atmospheres if you’re looking for a romantic evening out, but I didn’t mind being next to strangers. There are individual tables situated at the back half of the restaurant for those who wish for a more personal experience.

The service was great. I wondered how they kept track of the new people sitting down with such a full restaurant, especially with communal tables, but somehow they managed wonderfully. The waitress came over within a few minutes of us sitting down and took our orders. We ordered the fresh rolls to start (from the vegan & gluten free menus) and I ordered the pad thai as an entree. Everything came in a timely manner, even though the restaurant was busy. Something I really like from Khao’s menu is that they have a spice scale. The numbers range from 0 to 11 and from no spice to top spicy. This is great because it gives the chef a very precise indication of your tastes. I wish more restaurants adopted this type of system.

Khao San Road is located in the heart of downtown Toronto. The crowd was mixed from business men coming to eat after work, to families. For a downtown hot spot, I was extremely content with the prices. Entrees were $15 CAD and apps ranged from $8 CAD to $11 CAD. Portion sizes were just right – not huge, but just enough.

All in all, I loved Khao San Road. I can definitely see myself throwing parties there in the future. I would not recommend it for a romantic evening out, but rather a night out with friends.
